Traditional Ballet: Level 1

Sample Video

In “Dance: The Cutting Edge – Traditional Ballet: Level 1” we help the dancer develop their solid foundation of ballet technique and proper body alignment. This level is geared for learners 6 years of age and older with adjustments through the beginner teen and adult level. Body alignment, control of center, balance, strength, class structure, and etiquette are further promoted in conjunction with technique. Dancers move through a traditional barre consisting of Pliés, Tendus, Jetés, Dégagés, Piques, Passés, Relevés, Port de Bras through 5th position, Rond de Jambes, Frappés, and Développés. At this level, students begin strengthening their Arabesques, working on balance and position for Pirouettes, and start basic Petit Allegro.

The instructor offers detailed breakdowns of each move, offers corrections for common mistakes, and has students demonstrate exercises and new material. Strengthening exercises are done in center as well as during an introduction to Adagio. Across the floor consists of Bourrées, Ballet Walks, Glissades, Chassés and more introductory movements. No Grande Allegro is introduced at this point, and each class ends with a traditional Reverence. In all, students will learn more than 40 new steps!

Our “Traditional Ballet” video series is full of superb learning and teaching tools stemming from the artistic vision of Elizabeth Acuña Nuevo, owner and director of Artistic Dance Center located in Doral, Florida. Elizabeth teaches Levels 1-4 alongside Nadine Barton. Nadine is currently in her fourth season with the Alabama Ballet, performing soloist and corps de ballet roles in works such as Don Quixote and Coppelia.
