Why I Created DTCE

I’m Kimberly Beck Thomson, and I created Dance: The Cutting Edge because I was tired of trying to hold my studio together with duct tape, coffee, and decades of scribbled-on dance notes.
When I was running my own studio, we had over 600 students and 17 teachers. I had binders from every seminar I’d ever attended, years of experience, and a deep love for teaching—but every week still felt like a scramble. Every teacher was doing something different. Classes felt disconnected. And I was spending way too many late nights rewriting lesson plans that should have already existed. I didn’t need more random combos or Pinterest ideas. I needed a system. Something clear, proven, and ready to hand off to any teacher—knowing they’d be covered.
So I built it. Dance: The Cutting Edge is what I wish I had years ago. It’s a video-based, accredited platform designed specifically for dance educators and studio owners. It includes thousands of teacher training videos and progressive syllabi across every genre and level—from preschool to advanced. This isn’t just a bunch of clips with dancers showing off. I built DTCE to solve real classroom problems. Each tutorial is created for real teachers working with real students. You’ll see hands-on corrections, different camera angles, common mistakes, timing tips, and clear breakdowns that show how to teach each skill step by step.
She went on to receive awards for her choreography and has had the privilege of choreographing several opening production numbers for NBC’s Orange Bowl Parades in Miami. Other achievements include judging numerous regional and national dance competitions, serving on the faculty of distinguished dance organizations, owner/artistic director of Dance Unlimited Miami for ten years (ranked one of the top 50 studios in the US), and serving on the Florida Dance Masters Board of Directors for twenty-five years.
Kimberly is especially passionate about working with students of all backgrounds, ages, and levels. She is proud to note that her dancers are consistently recognized for having a superior level of technique, poise, and stage presence. Kimberly’s former students have accomplishments that include: performing in New York, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas; winning season five of the hit TV show, So You Think You Can Dance; starring in a TV series (The CW); touring with Broadway (including 42nd Street and West Side Story); teaching at Steps and Broadway Dance Center; appearing in La Cage aux Folles; and performing as back-up dancers for Britney Spears and Beyoncé.
